Growing our Organic Future.
An intensive organic micro-farm
At "Petit Jardin", we devote ourselves to intensive organic market gardening based on agroecology and organic farming principles, all on a small plot of land.
Our production
On less than 3,000 square meters, we cultivate over 50 different vegetable varieties. A permanent bed system combined with crop rotation significantly enhances soil health and leads to more nutrient-dense produce. By maintaining fixed planting areas, permanent beds reduce soil compaction and disturbance, promoting better root development and microbial activity. Crop rotation within these beds prevents the buildup of pests and diseases, balances nutrient use, and encourages a diverse soil ecosystem. This sustainable approach improves soil structure, increases organic matter, and supports a steady supply of essential nutrients, ultimately resulting in healthier plants and higher-quality crops.
The grower
Benoit Duclercq
Starting my journey in France studying water quality, I pursued a master’s degree in environmental management of the littoral and ecosystems. Following my studies, I travelled through Australia and New Zealand, taking on various odd jobs.
An opportunity to work in an organic market garden in Napier filled a gap in my experience and made me feel more grounded. The work connected me to the land in a meaningful way.
Over time, I grew within the role, eventually becoming the manager of over 12 hectares of vegetable production, leading large teams and overseeing the operation of numerous machines. I discovered the book The New Organic Grower by Eliot Coleman, a pioneer of the bio-intensive method and a prominent advocate for sustainable, small-scale farming. Further research introduced me to a range of innovative growers as Jean-Martin Fortier, Richard Perkins, Charles Dowding, Jessy Frost, Curtis Stone and many more…
We settled down with my wife and our two daughters on this 2-hectare property in Bayview.
Turning a page in 2020, we shifted to a human-scale, minimum tillage, organic market garden. This marked the beginning of Petit Jardin. Our approach prioritizes sustainable practices that respect the land and promote biodiversity, allowing us to produce fresh, healthy vegetables while maintaining soil health. Every season brings new challenges and rewards as we nurture our garden and watch it grow alongside our family.
The health of our family, community and planet are at the heart of our project.
